I started my planning career working for my father’s planning practice, (which also called ‘James Bailey Planning’), in Leicestershire back in 1999. This is where I learnt about the importance of sound planning advice, reliability, and good client relations.

I then moved to London in 2002, where I spent time working in both the Planning and Surveying Departments of the City of London Corporation. During this time I worked in the street naming division (and I have a few interesting stories); in the policy team protecting the views of St. Paul’s Cathedral; and in the City Property Advisory Team assisting on large commercial schemes such as Swiss Re Tower (aka The Gherkin). I was also involved in the UNESCO World Heritage Site protection of The Tower of London. In addition, I worked for GVA Grimley for a period, which had an influence on my career.

In 2008 I moved the family to Suffolk, and I worked as a Senior Planner for Mid Suffolk District Council. There I helped to prepare and guide Local Plan documents, advise on large planning applications, and I was also involved in a Compulsory Purchase Order.

In 2011 I moved to Boyer’s Colchester Office, where I was engaged in site promotions and applications for developers, national house builders, promoters, and individual land owners. In 2016 I became a Director at the firm.

I have significant experience with both greenfield and brownfield sites, as well as dealing with large and small commercial and employment developments, residential led schemes, retail, and mixed use proposals. I have addressed Design Review Panels, and Planning Inspectors either at examinations or appeals, either for a Local Authority or on behalf of clients.

Most importantly, I have extensive project management experience, and over the years I like to think I have perfected the art of positive and proactive engagement. I also have a comprehensive knowledge of master planning, and preparing development briefs.

At the end of 2019 I decided to set up on my own, and I look forward to assisting you with any planning issues you, friends, colleagues, or family members may have with my own unique and enthusiastic take on planning...
